We started two pieces by Abraham Lincoln.  Notes taken, worksheets and directions given for formulation of time line and summary sheet.  Remember we will be visiting the INFO Center on Tues to begin finding research sources for your Term 2 MLA papers.

HW:  Review as needed to do well.  Returned most recent quiz on TKAM.  Started oral reading of Tom’s testimony (Ch. 19) and class was asked to finish it independently in class.  Guidesheet given for Ch. 19-22.  Time was given in class to finish the court scenes through Ch. 22 for next class.  Work on your guide questions.

Returned your checked conclusion draft and you had the opportunity to ask questions regarding my comments.  Incorporate these and bring all your drafted/printed  paper to class next time for a checklist activity.

Please be sure you have purchased your novel for Term 2  HANGING ON TO MAX is available in the MPS Bookstore/Campus Ministry by the end of this week because we will start it next week.  Intro to an autobiographical excerpt in your textbook called “The Loophole of Retreat”.  The article was read aloud and a series of questions are to be copied into notes and answered as followup.  Be sure these are done by next class.

HW: Study Lists 10-12 roots and words in preparation for your exam next week.  Intro to your novel with specific instructions about noting within the book as you read, keeping track of characters and the main events in each chapter.  Time was given in class to read Ch. 1-2 and keep track of characters as introduced and their relationship with Sam.  A 2-3 sentence summary must be written in your book at the end of Ch. 1 and the end of Ch. 2 to summarize the contents of that chapter.  Listing of characters introduced on the board; List of obstacles, hardships and responsibilities that Sam faces every day—board to notes.

WW roots review activity to help you get ready for your test on Lists 10-12 next week.  HW:  Prepare for your exam by using the word and root sheets you did in class, highlighting your blanks or mistakes.  Went over the people in Sam’s life and if they assist and help him in some way or not.  Listed your hw responses to the obstacles, hardships and difficulties that Sam faces every day in taking care of Max and balancing school obligations. Identified imp. characters and their function in the novel.  HW:  Read Ch. 3-4 and annotate in your book ; be sure to write a summary at the end of both chapters as you were asked to do.  Highlight new characters and/or how previously introduced characters are adding to the story line.  Quiz given on Ch. 3-4; HW: Read, annotate and do chapter summaries for Chapters 5,6,7.

WW List 13 root review with a partner.  Associated words given from overhead to notes for hw study.  Asked all to pick any 6 words and provide 6 separate sentences with strong and clear context.  Underline your words of choice and hand this work in.  Absentees need to see me before the end of the week to take both the Max quiz and WW test on Lists 10-12.  So that means that next week I can return the graded work those of you who were in school have completed.  Your grades from this week ARE on line on Powerteacher, as usual.  Small discussion groups to cover summaries for your Max hw reading due today: Ch. 9-10  followed by a quiz.  We read Ch. 11 aloud because it is another flashback chapter showing us Sam’s mother’s death at home and his reactions.  Be sure you have written a summary and noted the introduction of Aunt Connie and the nurse.  Class had 15 minutes at the end to begin hw reading due next time:  Ch. 12, 13, & 14.

Fill in blank sentences using your associated words.  Placed the answers in notes and checked these when time limit was up.  HW: Continue the study of both the roots and words in List 15; begin your review of Lists 13-15 in preparation for your exam next week.   Broke class into groups to receive instruction and work on draft of either your letter, essay or Powerpoint choice as your final assessment for “Hanging on the Max.” HW:  Continue work on this writing in draft form and bring what you have done to next class.

Parrtners chose fairy tale of choice and had time in class to read it.  Ten questions were copied from the board to notes to answer as they apply to your chosen story.  Time was given to work on the responses.

Next class, you will take your responses and work at creating a presentation and “character bag” to share with the class late next week.

Word Wizard roots for list 12 were introduced and flashcards made with the roots on the front and meanings on the back.  Your pile of cards needs to be used as hw study each night  this week.  Also, review Lists 10 & 11 as you have time.  A literary essay called “Three Days to See!” was read aloud in class.  Background was given about the writer Helen Keller.  An essay form to follow was copied from the board and using the essay, students were to complete the body of a summary essay.

WW List 12 roots practiced alone, with a partner and then used to complete a puzzle.  HW:  Continue to study this list and review Lists 10 & 11.  You will have a test on Lists 10-12 the week of January 17—before midterm.  We continued work with the Helen Keller essay and focused on your composition about the things and people she would like to see if her blindness was taken away for three days.   A3: Your completely written summary of Helen Keller’s essay is due next class.

WW root review with partner in preparation for your test next Tuesday on the roots from Lists 10-12. Discussed your 5 hw questions. We looked at three passages from “Marigolds” to see proof of the things that troubled Lizabeth and motivated her to destroy Miss Lottie’s flowers.  We discussed the difference between being innocent and having compassion for others. Work was done on an activity sheet for any 5 vocabulary words from the short story “Marigolds”.  This was done in class  as directions were given and an example was given and handed in by the end of the class.

  WW List 13 root review.  Intro to List 14 roots and flashcards made to be used for study of this new list.

Started a unit on Greek mythology.  Note taking, vocabulary exercise, distributed a packet for our first selection called “The Palace of Olympus” to get students familiar with the gods and goddess that live on Mt. Olympus.    Notes taken and vocabulary for our first selection was defined and placed in notes for study.
